Tech Shop Inside!

TechShop Inside! introduces students to the engineering design process using laser cutters, 3D printers, and electronics. Throughout this project-based curriculum, students will move through identifying design problems, brainstorming creative solutions, and prototyping human centered inventions using CAD (computer aided design) skills in Adobe Illustrator. Additionally, all students leave with a project of their own design, aimed at solving a problem in their everyday life. Previous examples include programming alarm clocks, designing and laser cutting lamps, and modeling then 3D printing chess sets. Please see the weekly syllabus below. Bussing from all FCASD Elementary Schools and Dorseyville Middle School is available for this class. Parents and caregivers provide the ride home.

Agenda:
Week 1: Tinkercad for 3D Printing Part 1
We will guide students through the fundamentals of 3D modelling using the online program TinkerCAD. Students will design dice, a custom keychain with their name, and a diamond ring. We will bring the TechShop 3D printer on-site to begin printing for the students.
Week 2: Tinkercad for 3D Printing Part 2
Students will be given the design challenge of creating a fictional character using the skills they have developed through the 3D modelling software. We will again bring the TechShop 3D printer on-site to begin printing for the students.
Week 3: Adobe Illustrator for CNC Vinyl Cutting
Students will learn the basics of Illustrator for designing stickers on the vinyl cutter. Each
child will leave with custom stickers that they’ve designed themselves.
Week 4: Soldering Electronics Part 1
Students will learn the safety and basic use of soldering irons and will solder a simple
LED robot pin that they can wear on their shirts.
Week 5: Soldering Electronics Part 2
Students will build upon the skills developed in the previous session in order to solder an
entire wearable wrist watch from start to finish.
Week 6: Laser Cutting Catapults
Students will laser cut and assemble catapults and then participate in a competition to
see who can tear down a tiny wooden wall using wooden projectiles.
