Specialty Camps 2024
Half-day specialty camps at the Lauri Ann West Community Center provide exciting experiences presented by our trusted partners including Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre, Mad Science, Little Med School, Knight School Chess, Assemble Pgh and more. Prices, times, and age groups vary by camp, so please check each individual listing.
- Campers must be 5 years old before 1/1/2018 and have been enrolled in Kindergarten for the 23/24 academic year.

- Cancellation Policy:
- Cancellations made 14 days or more prior to the start of camp will receive a 100% refund (minus a $20 administration fee).
- Cancellations made within 13 days prior to camp start date will not receive a refund.
- Full refunds will be given to those who follow the cancelation policy or if a camp is canceled due to low enrollment or unforeseen circumstances.
- There is a $20 administration fee assessed on any cancellations, changes or refunds.

Shake up a flask of fun in the lab as a junior chemist! This hands-on and interactive camp is packed solid with cool reactions. Students put on goggles and change liquid to solid and back again. They get to handle laboratory tools, build and break molecules, and pick up some tricks on chemical changes.

Knight School Chess Students will learn the best chess strategies and will receive their own Knight School branded chess sets and t-shirt, as well as our colorful Tactix Bands for performing good moves on the chess board!
Chess Camp with Jules Coulson! Join local chess instructor Jules Coulson for this half day summer camp at the Lauri Ann West Community Center! This camp is for students aged 6yrs-12yrs who have some chess experience and those who are new to chess and would like to learn. Instruction will cover the basics and essential chess concepts in all areas of the game. Students will apply what they’ve learned and play weekly tournament games against each other. Drop off only! Session 1 only!

Calling all campers, budding engineers, and young makers! We’re learning through making, testing out wild ideas, and building a better future. Students explore the wonderful world of STEAM with hands-on activities and dreaming up creative inventions.
Back by popular demand – BigFoot Camp! Can you find Bigfoot? Or a Sasquatch? What about a Yeti? Join us on walks around Lauri Ann West’s grounds in search of these creatures. We’ll learn about different cultures and the lore of these creatures through stories and crafts. We’ve heard it can get pretty squatchy around. Spots are filling up quickly, make sure you secure yours!

New Camp! From the earliest flying machines to the first rocket flights, this hands on program will allow students to build many different flying devices, see how Newton’s laws of motion help explain how things moves and how rockets fly, and show the, how amazing our Milky Way is!

Become a paw-some and purr-fect veterinarian! Camp participants will role-play the key responsibilities of a veterinarian and learn how to care for a dog. These future veterinarians will learn how to remove ticks, perform a nose- to-tail exam, understand proper animal nutrition and hydration, suture lacerations, and more!
In this camp get hands-on with structural, mechanical, environmental, computer, and bio-engineering! Build bridges, design cars, and learn about machine learning! Engineer design process to prototype, re-imagine, and create the world around you! Our lessons are designed to support in-school learners and teachers in building off the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) K-12 science content standards as well as PA Arts Standards and Social Justice Standards. This multi-dimensional approach provides a deeper connection to the learning for the student, presenting classroom content in a new context. Youth are able to practice and apply concepts through hands-on creative projects.
Camp participants will role-play emergency situations in the wild and learn how to prepare for natural disasters. These future emergency medics will learn about snake bites, hypothermia, tourniquets, poisonous plants, edible plants, distress signals, forest fires, tornadoes, mosquito bites, and more.
Soccer Shots Camp at the Lauri Ann West Community Center gives children a high-energy introduction to fundamental principles of soccer such as footwork, dribbling and basic rules through games, songs and positive reinforcement. Class meets on the field each day!

Soccer Shots Premier focuses on individual skill, fitness and sportsmanship, providing an opportunity for children to be challenged through fun games and team interaction. Children will also be introduced to competition in a developmentally appropriate manner. Class meets on the field each day!
Bring the Next Generation Science Standards to life in your camper through chemistry! This interactive and creative program focuses on different ways that chemistry is behind all aspects of science!
Inspired learning today – healthy futures tomorrow! Camp participants will role-play the key responsibilities of a doctor and learn about vital organs in the human body. These future doctors will learn how to use a stethoscope, blood pressure cuff, and reflex hammer. They will practice administering first aid, learn how pharmacists play a role in administering medications, and more!
A session of fun with amazing robots! Learn about the uses of robots in our world and spend time experimenting with super cool red-hot robots. Discover the science of circuits and how robots use sensors to explore things around them. Use your skills to build your very own working robot to take home with you! Price includes take home robot!
