June Group Ex Schedule Announced

Our June Group Ex schedule features 50 classes challenging and rewarding classes to accommodate just about any fitness goal or schedule.

Please see the changes below from our May schedule:

  • Monday Morning Cardio Strength (11:15am-12pm with Jess) has been removed from the schedule and will be reevaluated in the fall.
  • Tuesday Night Power Yoga (7-8pm with Becca) is now Vinyasa Flow Yoga.
  • Tuesday Morning Spin Class with Jessica will now meet 7-7:45am.
  • Thursday Night Vinyasa Flow Yoga (7-8pm with Natalie) is now Mat Pilates with Deanna.
  • Friday Power Yoga (8-9am with Becca) is now Vinyasa Flow Yoga.

The Lauri Ann West Community Center has opened additional spots for summer camps on select weeks, June-August. If you’re still looking for a summer camp experience for your child, register soon. Many weeks are filling quickly!

Half-Day Specialty Camps Offer Unique Experiences 

Don’t forget about our half-day Specialty Camps. These camps are led by our trusted community partners including JumpBunch, Little Medical School, Mad Science of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh Center for Arts and Media, Gemini Theater, Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre and more.

Topics include performing arts, ballet, chemistry, robots, outdoor adventure, medical care, printmaking, volleyball and more. These week-long camps meet conveniently in the mornings or afternoons. Click here to view topics and weeks.


Summer Ballet Classes Begin June 7

The Lauri Ann West Community Center’s longstanding partnership with Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre (PBT) provides area children and adults an introduction to the timeless art of ballet.

Classes for children ages 3-9 and adults 18 & up explore imagery, imagination and self-expression as students learn & grow. Led by instructor Marcie Day, classes take place in our very own dance studio which offers ballet barres, mirrored walls and a multi-purpose sports floor for extra comfort.

Our 6-week summer session begins Tuesday, June 7. All classes are $225 members ($250 non-members). Register for the appropriate age group below:

Pre-Ballet (ages 3-4)

Meets Tuesdays, 4:30-5:15pm beginning June 7

Pre-Ballet (ages 5-6)

Meets Tuesdays, 5:15-6pm for beginning June 7

Pre-Ballet (ages 7-9)

Meets Tuesdays, 6-7pm beginning June 7

Adult Ballet (18 & up)
Meets Tuesdays, 7-8pm beginning June 7

No pre-evaluation or placement class required. Students should wear a black Lycra leotard, pink (not shiny) tights and leather ballet shoes to class. (Classes will not meet July 5.)

New Classes

Design Your Life Class with Thomas Lahman, PhD Begins June 8 

Looking for a new career? feeling stuck? want a new direction in life? or just wondering what to do next?

Join us at the Lauri Ann West Community Center beginning June 8 as we welcome Master Certified Life Coach Thomas Lahman, PhD for a 6-week course to help you develop a constructive and effective approach to designing your life.

Examine your “life story” and shift your thinking & approach to see life as a journey to be experienced. Learn how to fix dysfunctional attitudes that might be blocking your progress. We’ll also explore what gives you energy, along with what drains it.

Thomas offers a framework, tools and a community of peers & mentors to work through individual issues with in-class exercises, reflections and assigned readings.

Class meets 6-8pm Wednesdays beginning June 8 and is suitable for ages 18 & up.

Cost is $125 ($150 non-members). The first 10 to register receive a free individual coaching session valued at $100.

Registration closes Friday, June 3.

Learn the Exciting Game of Mah Jongg Beginning June 15

Join instructor Dorothy Drennen and learn the exciting game of Mah Jongg. A 3-week series of classes begins Wednesday, June 15; meeting from 1-3pm.

Mah Jongg is a rummy-like game played with tiles and is believed to have originated in mid-19th century China. This class will cover gameplay, strategy, tile symbols, winning hands, the use of suits, dealing, rules and more.

Class is suitable for ages 12 & up. Cost is $125 ($145 non-members).

Community Center Hosts East Coast Swing Workshop June 25

Join instructor Lisa Tamres for an introduction to East Coast Swing (ECS) from 1-3pm Saturday, June 25.

This one-day workshop will cover the basics of this fun social dance including good leading and following dance techniques, along with several fun dance moves. Students will rotate partners during the workshop to share knowledge.

Lisa has been dancing and teaching various forms of Swing Dance for more than 30 years. She has also directed and performed with the Steel Town Stompers Lindy Hop Troupe from 2009- 2015.

Class is suitable for ages 13 & up. Cost is $35 ($45 non-member).


Instructor Spotlight

Jill Mucci

Jill Mucci grew up in Shaler and graduated from the University of Pittsburgh. Aside from living in Parkersburg, WV for two years while working as a software engineer, she has called Pittsburgh home.

Jill has been married for 33 years and has three adult children. Her hobbies include swimming, biking, running and learning about how our amazing bodies function on a daily basis.

Jill has been a Spin instructor for more than 10 years and an Essentrics instructor for more than 6 years.

Her favorite workout tip is to stay hydrated and drink lots of water throughout the entire day.

Jill’s Essentrics classes currently meet 11am-12pm Mondays and 11:15am-12:15pm Tuesdays. She also teaches a variety of Pop-Up Essentrics classes throughout the month.

Part-Time Personal Trainer Wanted

We’re currently seeking a part-time personal trainer.

This position is responsible for assisting members in accomplishing their personal training goals through safe equipment usage and proper exercise form. They also promote and field questions regarding Lauri Ann West Community Center programs, monitor equipment for repair needs, and maintain a clean and safe environment for members.

 UPMC St. Margaret will be hosting a FREE informal Diabetes Support Group meeting 4-5pm Thursday, June 2 in the St. Margaret Café.

The meeting will provide guests with tools to stay healthy and active.

Celebrate the Rich Culture & History of Sharpsburg Saturday, June 4

Spend a day enjoying the sights and sounds of Sharpsburg 11am-4pm Saturday, June 4 during their 2022 Art & History Stroll.

This self-guided tour along the Main Street Business District invites attendees to visit more than 20 local businesses and places of interest for art, history and more.

Second Harvest’s Parklet Opens June 4 as Part of Art & History Stroll

Second Harvest Community Thrift Store’s Parklet Grand Opening takes place 11am-1pm Saturday, June 4.

Enjoy the unveiling of this new space as part of the Sharpsburg Art & History Stroll. The event will include a food truck, music, art and more.

Second Harvest is located at 624 Clay Street in Sharpsburg. Free, onsite parking is available.
